Polished petrified wood

A group of polished petrified woods, mostly araucaria, from Czech localities. What is most interesting about this installation is the fact that we can see petrified araucaria conifer next to live examples of conifers, plants so close in appearance, yet so far apart in age - more than 300 million years.

Many hundreds of millions of years ago the tree trunks (mostly araucaria) were covered by layers of sediments, seeped through with quartz solution from nearby rocks, subsequently due to other geological processes (tectonic, erosion) they reappeared on the top.

The exhibits of petrified wood on show come from the areas around Pilsen, Lounsko and Podkrkonoší, from the collection of the Geosvět museum.
